Delivering Best Mans Speeches
Most guys, blurt out ‘okay’ to their friends invitation to act as their best men. Nothing wrong in there, after all, it’s always nice to hear that your friend is getting married. But after a while, reality quickly sets in. You remember that the best mans speeches come along this privilege. Unless you are a trained public speaker or has some experience speaking in public speaking, you’d find this part of your job a bit nerve wracking. This is worsened by the fact that you’ll have to speak in front of your friends, families and guests who might know you. Hopefully, the tips in this article will calm you nerves and prepare you for your friend’s big day.
Be sincere and natural. It’s not like you’re in an oration contest and you’re not here to electrify the audience with your speech. If you approach the podium with these attitudes, you’d most likely come across as artificial. So try to be as sincere and natural as you can. If you do so, ten to one, you’ll have an excellent delivery, if not a flawless one.
Although many are afraid to look stupid in front of friends, for some people it helps to know that they are in their comfort zone where slight mistakes are tolerable and are, in fact, forgivable. So there really is no need to impress them with an extravagant speech. Also, it is much easier for the audience to watch a natural speaker as he tends to be more entertaining and pleasing than someone who treats it like a state of the nation address.
To read from your notes or not to read from them. You always have the option to have your speech memorized, to keep some point cards handy, or to memorize your speech and use point cards at the same time. If you memorize your speech and rely heavily on your memory, chances are you’ll forget some parts. Unless you can easily make some adlibs, you’d be stuck in one sentence, looking for a way to end your speech faster than you first intended. With that said, it is okay to memorize your speech but what is not okay is to depend entirely on your memory. To ensure a flawless speech delivery, it is best to keep with you some small idiot cards on which some key points of your speech are written. On a side note, keep in mind that the introductory lines of your speech need not have a script.
Get prepared in advance. It’s not a good idea to prepare your speech the night or on the day of the wedding. Even if you’re confident that you can pull an extemporaneous speech off, it is still better to be prepared. A prepared speech allows you to become more conversant, making it easier for you to speak naturally in front of the audience.
Keep it brief but entertaining. Any speech longer than 5 minutes, unless you have the knack for keeping your audience entertained, is boring. So try to keep your speech short, entertaining and naturally funny.
Keep your head alcohol-free. Stay away from the punch bowl until after you have delivered your speech. Although alcohol can help your nerves, it doesn’t help you with your speech.
Bring these tips with you as you deliver your best mans speeches. Trust us, these could help a lot.
