Customs Of Speeches For Weddings

Wedding is a social tradition that has its roots in ancient customs and goes as far back as many centuries ago. Here, in this part of the world, customs and traditions for speeches for weddingshave developed. Some of the more notable ones are here.

The exact order of the wedding speeches – Before the modern times, only 3 speeches are delivered during weddings – the father of the bride speech, the groom speech, and the speech delivered by the best man. This is the origina arrangement of the speeches and for many years, have remained unchanged. With the emergence of new speeches, such as the maid of honour speech and the bridal speech, this arrangement have changed. Whether to follow the traditional or the modern succession of the speeches is entirely the call of the couple.

Structure of the speeches – While modern changes have affected the succession of delivering the wedding speeches, the structure of each seems to have only changed a bit. The only areas where significant changes can be seen are in the tone and format of the speech. Whereas the bridegroom’s speech used to be highly formal, it has now become a speech where humor is accepted. The best man speech can also be given by two, instead of one best man, and lately a lady best man. Some things don’t change though. The father of the bride’s speech, for example, still has the same old affectionate tone.

Who delivers particular messages – The tone, the format and the succession of the speeches may change but the content of individual speeches don’t. The first to speak, the father of the bride, is usually the one who welcomes the guests to the wedding reception. This introduction is then followed with a brief, and highly affection, description of his daughter. He also describes his daughter’s husband. He then finishes his speech with a toast to the his new son-in-law and daughter.

Next, is the speech of the bridegroom. His speech begins with welcoming the guests to the wedding, and recently with a joke or a funny one liner.

Traditionally, this is the speech where everyone, including the guests who attended the wedding, is singled out for their participation in the wedding and the preceeding preparations. Sandwiched between the introduction and the ending toasts, the groom can choose to give out his gifts to some of the people in the audience. As part of the groom’s speech, the groom also says some kind remarks about his wonderful wife. His speech ends with a toast or with a short introduction of the best man.

The funniest speech of all, the best man’s speech is where less gentle teasing is allowed. It is in this speech where entertaining anecdotes are mentioned. The funny speech ends in the more serious tone of the ‘toast of the parents’.

speeches for weddings revolve around traditions that have developed over the centuries. Although there are rules to be followed, changes permitted in recent times have literally changed many of the speeches’ characteristics.
